GETTING TO AND FROM PALENQUE: Palenque is located in Chiapas, Mexico It is 2.25 hours from the Villahermosa airport, 5 hours from San Cristobal de las Casas, 2.5 hours from Bonampak and Yaxchilan, 3 hours from Tonina There are no commercial flights into the Palenque airport but there are a number of ways to get to Palenque. The closest airport to Palenque is in Villahermosa (2.5 hours away by car). -- Fly into Villahermosa and take a taxi to Palenque (around $90), or if you're joining a MayaSites tour you will be met by a MayaSites driver at the Villahermosa airport and transported to Palenque. Continental Airlines has non-stop flights from Houston and there are several non-stop flights a day from Mexico City to Villahermosa for around $120 each way. -- Fly into Merida and take a 1 hour non-stop flight to Villahermosa for around $160 each way or rent a car and drive to Palenque (6 hours). -- Fly into Cancun, take a 1 hour non-stop flight to Villahermosa (cost of the round trip ticket is around $500). --- Fly into Cancun and take an inexpensive first class bus to Palenque, about a 13 hour ride and costs around $65. -- Fly into Cancun and rent a car. Cancun is 10 hours drive to Palenque. -- From Tikal (Guatemala) it is possible to get to Palenque by land. Travel either by public bus or private car to the Mexico border, take a short ferry ride across the river and then go by land to Palenque. If done by private car or van the trip takes around 7 hours.
